Chevy Loyalty Strained: Owns a 2023 Tahoe with a Defective Transmission, 2024 Silverado Also Recalled Due to Engine Malfunction

In a series of ongoing recalls, General Motors (GM) is facing challenges with two of its popular models – the Chevrolet Tahoe and the Chevrolet Silverado. The recalls, affecting a wide range of vehicles, including the Chevy Tahoe, Silverado, Suburban, Cadillac Escalade, GMC Yukon, and Chevrolet Silverado 2022 models, are causing concern for thousands of customers, including Ashley Cross, a Virginia resident.

The Tahoe transmission recall is being addressed via software updates to prevent rear wheel lockup. However, the timeline depends on dealer repairs, which are actively underway. Ashley's 2023 Chevrolet Tahoe Z71 has been at the Chevrolet dealer for almost a month, with no update on when to expect the part or when it will be fixed.

The recall, identified as Special Coverage (N242454441), addresses a potential transmission control module software issue that can lead to an increased risk of crashes. Unfortunately, between 2,000 and 4,000 customers are waiting on the same transmission part, and GM cannot provide a time frame for when parts will be available.

Meanwhile, the Silverado RST engine recall involves potential catastrophic engine failure. The issue is linked to problems with the connecting rod and crankshaft in the 6.2-liter V8 L87 engine. NHTSA launched an investigation after thousands of complaints, and GM has issued a recall covering 2021-2024 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 models using this engine.

GM estimates about 21,000 engines worldwide may need replacement, and those not needing replacement will receive an oil viscosity change and an extended warranty covering the engine. A class-action lawsuit has been filed in Michigan alleging GM knowingly sold vehicles with defective L87 engines.

Ashley Cross, the owner of the 2023 Chevrolet Tahoe, has shared her situation on the Chevy Tahoe Owners Group Facebook page. She is seeking advice and trying to contact Chevy Corporate, GM Corporate, GM Parts, legal, and Virginia's attorney general, as she and her husband are still obligated to continue making loan payments on undriveable vehicles due to defective parts.

The recall requires dealers to inspect affected vehicles. If the inspection indicates a problem, the engine may be repaired or replaced. If the engine passes inspection, the oil filter will be replaced, and the vehicle will be switched to a higher viscosity oil.

The valve body issue on Ashley's Chevy Tahoe was not addressed in a recall notification, despite it being a potential problem. Her Chevrolet dealer told her to keep an eye on the issue, but the problem persisted, requiring the transmission to be taken apart completely.

The recall impacts over 107,000 Silverado 1500s in the U.S. and approximately 721,000 vehicles across GM's lineup globally. The issue with the Silverado RST engine can lead to engine damage, engine failure, and unexpected stalling, especially while towing.

As these recalls continue, GM is experiencing a national backorder of transmission control valve bodies, causing delays in repairing vehicles affected by the recall. It is a challenging time for customers like Ashley Cross, who are left waiting and uncertain about when their vehicles will be repaired and when they can get back on the road.

  1. The ongoing industry challenges faced by General Motors (GM) extended to the realm of finance, as numerous customers, including Ashley Cross, are burdened with continuing loan payments on undriveable vehicles due to defective parts.
  2. In the transportation sector, the automotive industry is under scrutiny as GM grapples with repair delays caused by national backorders of transmission control valve bodies, leaving customers like Ashley Cross in a state of uncertainty about when their vehicles will be fixed and they can get back on the road.
