Chevron Refinery Explosion in El Segundo: Fire Contained, CO2 Plant Offline
A significant explosion and fire broke out at Chevron's refinery in El Segundo, California, on Tuesday. The refinery, which processes 290,000 barrels of crude oil daily, produces a range of transportation fuels, including gasoline, jet fuel, and diesel. Fortunately, the blaze was contained to one section of the facility.
The incident has also impacted the 600-ton-per-day CO2 plant, operated by Linde at the refinery. This plant was previously shut down in February 2023 due to an unrelated accident. Following the recent explosion, the CO2 plant remains offline. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
Chevron has assured the public that the fire is under control and there are no reported injuries. The company is working to restore operations safely and minimize any environmental impact. The refinery's production of crucial transportation fuels is expected to be affected, but Chevron has not yet provided details on the extent of the disruption.
