Central Munich hit by gastronomical upheaval: Local cult restaurant declares bankruptcy - "I'm deeply disheartened"
In the heart of Munich, a beloved culinary institution, Opatija, finds itself in a challenging situation. The restaurant, known for its lavish Balkan fusion cuisine and a popular meeting place for celebrities and artists in the 70s and 80s, filed for insolvency as of August 1st.
The Opatija has been a fixture in Munich's restaurant landscape since 1960, with Ralf Faltermeier, the brother of composer Harold Faltermeyer, previously operating the Balkan locale for over 40 years before retiring and passing it on to Maximilian Oberbigler and Dominic Graf von Matuschka. The duo took over the restaurant in the fall of 2023, fulfilling a "childhood dream."
However, recent developments have cast a shadow over this dream. The kitchen renovation at Opatija was more extensive than expected, potentially contributing to the difficulties faced by the restaurant. Despite Maximilian Oberbigler's investment of 300,000 euros in an attempt to save the establishment, the restaurant's current financial status and future plans remain unclear.
In an effort to salvage the situation, Oberbigler tried to use his private assets, but for legal reasons, he declined to comment on the ongoing proceedings. The amount of debt and the identity of the insolvency administrator, Jochen Zaremba, have not been disclosed.
Despite the uncertainty, operations at both Opatija locations in Munich's city centre will continue until the end of September. During this period, the 30 employees will be paid from the insolvency fund.
The future of Opatija remains uncertain, but one thing is clear: its legacy in Munich's culinary scene will not be easily forgotten. The cult locale, named after the glamorous seaside resort in the Kvarner Bay in the northeastern part of the Istrian peninsula, has been a beacon of Balkan cuisine in Munich for over six decades.
As we await further updates, it's worth noting that insolvency proceedings for restaurants in Germany, including Munich, often involve a complex process of restructuring, potential sale, or liquidation. If you're interested in learning more about this process, feel free to ask!
In the meantime, let's hope for a positive outcome for Opatija and the community it has served for so many years.
