The Kreis Plön Transportation Company GmbH (VKP), a cornerstone of regional mobility in northern Germany, is set to celebrate its 60th anniversary on Saturday, July 13, 2023, at the Preetz depot, Hinter dem Kirchhof 12.

Founded on June 29, 1965, by the Kreis Plön, the cities of Lütjenburg and Preetz, and the municipality of Schönberg, VKP has grown from humble beginnings to become a reliable and trusted provider of public transportation in the Kreis area, as well as in the adjacent cities of Kiel and Neumünster, and the northern parts of the Segeberg and Ostholstein districts.

Over the years, VKP has undergone significant changes. In 2000, it initiated a supporting offer together with the Plön district for the primary schools of the district, known as the "Bus School," providing buses and specially trained staff to demonstrate proper bus handling and awareness of potential hazards. In 2006, the Kiel-Schönberger Railway operation ended, and in 2012, the bus division was discontinued due to lack of economic prospects. However, VKP's resilience shone through, and in 2019, it made the switch to electric drive technologies, now operating seven electric buses at the Preetz site.

The anniversary celebration will include an entertaining ceremony hosted by Anke Harnack, a "nostalgic-modern" surprise presented by Landrat Björn Demmin, and an open house day with a colorful program. Visitors can expect to see performances by the Heikendorfer Show Brass Band and the Big Band of the Friedrich-Schiller-Gymnasium Preetz, shows, games, a magician for children, a Formula-1 driving simulator, a VKP lucky wheel, and a vehicle exhibition.

In addition to its regular services, VKP guarantees reliable and comfortable transportation seven days a week, including the ALFA service, which provides public transportation where there were no bus lines before, even on weekends and in off-peak hours. The demand for ALFA services has been continuously increasing since they were introduced.

VKP also operates so-called hired bus traffic, meaning that buses can be rented on request, for example for school trips or events. On the day of the anniversary celebration, a special timetable with free rides will be offered for external guests, with stops that can be found online at www.vkp.de.

The VKP is supported by 19 shareholders and transports more than five million passengers annually. In 1985, it started closer cooperation with other transportation companies, becoming an active part of the modern development of public transportation, enabling customers to use transportation services easily and across companies.

For the most accurate and detailed information about the planned program for the 60th anniversary celebration, we recommend contacting the VKP directly via their official website or customer service. Local news outlets or community event listings around that date might also have published the program details.
