BT Aims to Deliver 5G Standalone to 99% of UK by 2030
BT is pushing ahead with ambitious plans to enhance the UK's mobile network. The company aims to deliver 5G standalone to 99% of the population by 2030, four years ahead of competitors. This could unlock up to £230 billion (€264bn) in economic growth.
BT has been expanding its network, adding over 500 outdoor small cells in the last year. This brings the total to 1,500, boosting coverage nationwide. The company has also introduced Advanced Auto RAN Coordination (ARC) to its distributed mobile network, a first for any operator.
BT's network now offers up to 100 times more capacity than 4G, significantly improving reliability in busy areas. This is thanks to the deployment of a new generation of Advanced Auto MIMO units, with two already live in Leeds and hundreds more planned by the end of the decade. EE, a BT subsidiary, is the first European network to use these units.
BT's vision is to be the UK's most trusted connector, expanding 5G+ coverage and leading network innovation. To achieve this, BT has proposed improvements in new site planning, spectrum access, and the abolition of annual license fees, and has sought government support.
BT's 5G+ rollout, set to reach 99% of the UK population by 2030, could significantly boost the economy. The company's network enhancements, including Advanced Auto RAN Coordination and Advanced Auto MIMO units, are driving this progress. BT's ambitious plans aim to make it the UK's leading network provider.
