British Columbia's Site C Hydroelectric Dam is now in full swing, functioning efficiently.
Site C Dam Now Fully Operational, Boosting British Columbia's Clean Energy Supply
After years of construction and overcoming various challenges, the Site C Dam in British Columbia's Peace Region is now fully online and operational as of August 2025. This significant milestone marks a significant boost to the province's clean energy resources and electricity reliability.
The Site C Dam, with a capacity to generate over 1,100 megawatts of electricity, is enough to power about 500,000 homes annually[1][3][5]. This new capacity represents an increase of approximately eight percent in BC Hydro's total electricity supply.
The project, which began in 2015, faced multiple hurdles, including legal disputes and budget overruns. The final cost came in at around $16 billion, nearly double the original estimate, making it the most expensive dam in Canadian history[3][5]. Despite these challenges, Charlotte Mitha, BC Hydro president and CEO, expressed pride, stating that it is a proud moment for everyone at BC Hydro.
Although all six generating units are now in service, some related work such as final equipment commissioning and infrastructure finishing is still underway[1]. The completion of Site C is seen as a major step toward securing British Columbia’s clean energy future and meeting growing energy demands with renewable sources[1][3][5].
According to Adrian Dix, Minister of Energy and Climate Solutions, the Site C Dam is significant for securing British Columbia's clean energy future. The powerhouse, generating station, paving on access roads, final equipment commissioning, and addressing any deficiencies are still projects to be completed by BC Hydro.
With the Site C Dam now operational, it will play a critical role in ensuring a stable and reliable electricity system, contributing to the province's ambitious goals for a cleaner, more sustainable energy future.

The Site C Dam, with its ability to generate over 1,100 megawatts of clean energy, can contribute positively to the healthcare industry by powering various medical facilities and equipment. This added electricity also has the potential to facilitate advancements in the finance and energy industries by supporting the development and implementation of innovative technologies.
Despite the challenges faced during construction, the Site C Dam now plays a crucial role in promoting a more sustainable and financially stable future for British Columbia, as it generates clean energy and helps meet the province's growing energy demands.
