Bridge Unveiled: Präßnitz Bridge Now Accessible Starting From Friday
A Fresh Take on the Prießnitz Bridge Resurrection
After a long hiatus, Dresden's iconic Prießnitz Bridge and a stretch of Bautzner Straße are all set to reclaim their bustling glory! Following extensive repairs that have been underway since April 2023, both the bridge and the road will resume normal traffic flow from Friday. This momentous occasion marks one of the most significant, now wheelchair-accessible intersections in Dresden's Neustadt.
The bridge's renovation extended to a 250-meter-long stretch of Bautzner Straße between Prießnitzstraße and Stolpener Straße. Simone Prüfer, head of Dresden's Streets and Roads Department, shares, "From tomorrow, cars can drive in both directions on this stretch." Trams, too, will resume their journey from June 30.
September 2023 saw the commencement of demolition on the north side of the Prießnitz Bridge. Concurrently, the construction team upgraded the drainage, drinking water pipes, gas, electricity, and telecommunications lines in the section between Prießnitz and Radeberger Straße. Two barrier-free bus stops located on the bridge itself, equipped with seating, will serve as handy transit hubs.
Though the bike lane has been merged with the roadway, patchy connections towards Albertplatz and Rothenburger Street are expected to be addressed only by 2027, as revealed by Prüfer. The construction site for the new building on Pulsnitzer Street is currently the hurdle.
The total project cost stands at approximately 10 million euros, with the Free State contributing 1.6 million. DVB invested 7 million euros over a hundred weeks for the replacement bus service to Bühlau. This weekend, a test tram will undertake a "shortcut test," and a rail grinding vehicle will traverse the tracks. Come Monday, trams will once again ply these routes, bringing tremendous relief to residents of Holzhofgasse.
However, commuters should be aware of a three-week construction site at Postplatz during the summer holidays. Line 11 won't continue towards Bühlau from Postplatz during this period. Construction should be completed within three weeks as well. With the reopening, the detour via Holzhofgasse and Diakonissenweg, in place since mid-2023, will cease. This revamped infrastructure will ensure direct access to the Diakonissen Hospital, the medical center, and elderly care facilities from Bautzner Straße.
Worth Noting:
- Historical Perspective: The Prießnitz Bridge was first rebuilt in the late 19th century[1].
- Christopher Street Day: The reopening of the Prießnitz Bridge coincided with the 32nd Christopher Street Day celebrations in Dresden, which took place from May 29 to May 31, 2025[2].
