Bremen's economy persistently faces strains and stresses

In the heart of Germany, the economies of Bremen and Bremerhaven are currently facing a series of challenges. The construction industry in Bremen continues to struggle, with declining orders and a business climate index falling to 73 points. The manufacturing industry's business climate index has dropped significantly to 68 points, reflecting a deteriorating industry sentiment.

The economy in Bremen is burdened by unfavorable framework conditions, including high bureaucratic requirements, increasing labor costs, and weak domestic demand, which are hampering economic recovery and investment. Dr. Matthias Fonger, CEO of the Bremen Chamber of Commerce, has suggested several concrete measures to improve the location conditions and boost the competitiveness of the Bremen economy.

These measures include enhancing infrastructure, skilled labor development, supporting innovation, creating an attractive business environment, promoting sustainability initiatives, and fostering closer cooperation between business, academia, and government. The aim is to create favorable conditions for businesses, attract investment, and ensure long-term economic success for Bremen.

Despite the challenges, there are signs of improvement in some sectors. In Bremerhaven, the business situation is assessed as significantly better than in the spring, with the Bremerhaven Chamber of Commerce business climate indicator increasing by 15 points to 99 points. The retail sector in Bremen shows a slight recovery, with the retail business climate index rising significantly to 104 points. Transport and logistics companies in Bremen report a slightly improved business situation, although negative expectations still prevail.

However, the economy in Bremen is continuing to face challenges, particularly in the industry and construction sectors. The economy in Bremerhaven, particularly in retail, logistics, and some service sectors, has shown improvement. Yet, wholesale and foreign trade remain in a difficult situation, with the wholesale and foreign trade business climate index at 74 points.

In the hospitality sector, sentiment remains tense, with the business climate index in hotels and restaurants in Bremen improving to 57 points. Other services rate the current business significantly worse than before, and the business climate index falls slightly to 84 points.

As the summer of 2025 approaches, it is clear that the economies of Bremen and Bremerhaven are facing significant challenges. However, with the proposed measures and continued resilience, there is hope for a brighter future.

The finance sector in Bremen might find potential opportunities in the proposed measures to enhance infrastructure and support innovation, which could attract investment and ensure long-term economic success. Amid the ongoing challenges in the industry and construction sectors, the retail sector in Bremen seems to be showing signs of recovery, with the retail business climate index rising significantly.
