The company and the labor union are keen on making redundancies as painless as possible. To achieve this, dismissals due to operational reasons have been postponed until the end of 2028 for part of the workforce.
Even with cost-saving measures in place, Bosch is burning billions in losses in the steering division due to the crunch in the auto industry and fierce competition. As a response, functions will be consolidated, costs will be trimmed, and some production will move abroad to countries where labor costs are cheaper.
"We fought tooth and nail for every single job," said works council chairman Claudio Bellomo. However, he acknowledges that the economic situation is dire and can't be ignored. Goetz Nigge, area board member for Bosch, claims the deal is the foundation for reducing costs and putting the site back on track to profitable sustainability.
The technology powerhouse based in Gerlingen near Stuttgart has multiple reduction programs underway. Thousands of jobs worldwide are slated to go in the near future. Bosch CEO Stefan Hartung recently forecasted more job cuts due to the current economic climate.
