Block to Launch Bitcoin Payments on Square in Late 2025
Block, Inc., led by Jack Dorsey and a top-ten corporate Bitcoin holder, is set to introduce Bitcoin payment capabilities on its Square platform. The rollout is expected in two phases, with the initial launch in the second half of 2025 and full implementation in 2026, pending regulatory approvals.
The new feature, enabled by the Lightning Network, will allow customers to pay with Bitcoin at checkout by scanning a QR code. This network facilitates rapid settlement, while Square handles real-time exchange rate calculations and confirmation notifications, ensuring near-instant, low-cost transactions.
Block's Bitcoin ecosystem, which includes Cash App's buy, sell, and transfer capabilities, Bitkey, Proto, and Spiral, will expand with this new feature. Miles Suter, Bitcoin product lead at Block, has stated that the company's goal is to make Bitcoin more accessible and usable in everyday life. Merchants using the Square point-of-sale app will be able to accept Bitcoin payments directly through their existing hardware.
Block, Inc. is set to revolutionize Bitcoin payments with its Square platform, making it easier for customers to use Bitcoin in their daily transactions. With the initial rollout expected in late 2025, this move could significantly increase Bitcoin's usability and acceptance.
