Bikes are experiencing a surge in sales.
In the bustling landscape of the Russian motorcycle market, a significant shift has taken place over the past year. A record-breaking 43,000 new motorcycles were purchased in 2024, marking a 60% increase from the previous year, and this trend shows no signs of slowing down.
The growth in two-wheeler sales can be attributed to a combination of factors, chief among them the surge in demand for cost-effective, reliable transportation in a context of economic uncertainty. Chinese motorcycle brands have seized this opportunity, expanding their presence in the market by offering competitively priced models that suit Russian consumers' current purchasing power and preferences.
The annual industry exhibition "MotoSpring" provides a snapshot of this shift. Chinese motorcycle companies have the most lavish stands at the event, showcasing their affordable and high-quality motorcycles. In fact, Chinese brands accounted for 72% of total sales in motorcycles.
One of the key reasons for this trend is the withdrawal or import difficulties faced by Western motorcycle brands and manufacturers in Russia due to sanctions and trade restrictions. This has created a gap in the market that Chinese manufacturers have been quick to fill.
Russian consumers have been increasingly drawn to Chinese brands such as Regulmoto, which was the most popular motorcycle brand in Russia in July. Budget motorcycles with a 125 cc engine start from 100 thousand rubles, making them an accessible option for many.
The demand for mass-market motorcycles is also growing due to new motorcyclists receiving their driving licenses in large cities. Motorcycles have become fashionable, and learning to ride at a motorcycle school has become a sign of good taste.
European and American motorcycle brands are now considered luxury due to their high price, expensive logistics, and limited models. In contrast, Chinese motorcycles offer similar quality at a much lower cost. For 700-800 thousand rubles, a new motorcycle from China with a six-year warranty and official dealer service can be purchased.
The growth in the popularity and sales of motorcycles in Russia is a reflection of broader market realignment due to international sanctions impacting Western brands and Russia’s demand for affordable motorcycles. This has enabled Chinese companies to establish a leading position in the market.
While global motorcycle sales such as Suzuki’s declined in Europe by -36.8% in 2025, regions like Latin America and India saw strong growth, paralleling the rise of Chinese brands in Russia. The surge in sales of Chinese motorcycles in Russia is a testament to the adaptability and resilience of the market, and it will be interesting to see how this trend continues to evolve in the coming years.
Technology has played a significant role in the growth of Chinese motorcycle brands in Russia, as advancements in manufacturing processes and production efficiency have enabled them to offer competitively priced, high-quality motorcycles. Finance, too, has been a key factor, with the buying power of Russian consumers increasingly favoring affordable options in the context of economic uncertainty.
