Bankruptcy of Publishers Clearing House Halts Lifetime Sweepstake Winnings Payments
In a surprising turn of events, John Wyllie, a past winner of a substantial lottery jackpot from Publishers Clearing House, finds himself seeking employment after a decade of living off his weekly $5,000 payments. The company, known for its big cash sweepstakes competitions, filed for bankruptcy, and its remaining assets were purchased by mobile gaming firm ARB Interactive.
Mr. Wyllie, who won the jackpot in 2012, is now worried about losing his home due to the unpaid prizes. He shared his personal circumstances in an interview with KGW, a local news outlet, highlighting the impact of this situation on past winners.
Publishers Clearing House, founded in the 1950s, was a direct marketing company that offered various products and services, but it was perhaps best known for its lottery-style competitions. Some winners received promises of six-figure annual payments for life. However, with the company's bankruptcy and subsequent sale, a separate payment mechanism will be created for payouts to future winners.
ARB Interactive, the new owner, has acknowledged concerns about unpaid prizes to past winners but does not have to honour any lifetime prize payouts that occurred before July 15, 2025, as stated in the purchase agreement. The company, however, assures that its financial situation will not affect payouts to future winners.
Future winners can breathe a sigh of relief, as they will not have concerns about payouts, according to ARB Interactive. On the other hand, some individuals who won before the aforementioned date are now concerned about the unpaid prizes.
This decision not to honour past lifetime prize payouts has left a few winners, like Mr. Wyllie, in a precarious position. Despite the uncertainty, he remains hopeful, continuing his job search while holding onto the dream of a promised lifetime of financial security.
