Deutsche Bank to Close Postbank Partner Branches by End of 2025
Deutsche Bank has announced that it will be ending its partnership with Postbank partner branches, including stationery stores, kiosks, and other retailers, by the end of 2025. This decision is part of the bank's broader operational efficiency and transformation efforts within its Private Bank division.
Currently, customers can perform basic banking transactions such as depositing, withdrawing money, and making transfers at these partner branches. However, more complex banking transactions are not possible. This move aligns with the strategic reduction of capital-intensive lending and physical branch footprints to improve cost efficiency and focus on higher-margin businesses such as Wealth Management and Private Banking.
Postbank has also noted a decrease in customer traffic, product usage, and costs at these partner branches. The shift in banking behavior towards online transactions and the increasing share of cashless payments, particularly during the Corona pandemic, has led to this decision.
The closure of these partner branches may be a significant inconvenience for customers, especially those in rural areas, as they will no longer have access to cash withdrawals and personal contact services. There are currently around 1800 Postbank partner agencies nationwide, a number that has significantly reduced from 5000 in previous years.
Deutsche Bank's CEO, Christian Sewing, has emphasized the importance of 2025 as the final year of the current strategy focused on operational efficiency and profitable growth. Closing Postbank partner branches fits this context by reducing expenses amid challenging economic and geopolitical environments, while allowing Deutsche Bank to concentrate resources on digital and advisory offerings.
Savers should secure their Instant Access Savings Accounts with Deutsche Bank before March, as interest rates are expected to fall further. Postbank has not yet announced any plans for compensating customers affected by the closure of these partner branches.
This strategic move is part of Deutsche Bank's ongoing efforts to streamline operations, reduce costs, and shift focus towards more profitable business lines by the end of its current strategic cycle in 2025.
- This strategic move by Deutsche Bank to close Postbank partner branches aligns with its focus on reducing costs and shifting emphasis towards higher-margin businesses, such as Wealth Management and Private Banking, within the finance and banking-and-insurance industry.
- The decision to close Postbank partner branches may lead to inconvenience for customers, especially those in rural areas, who are accustomed to performing basic banking transactions at these retail locations, thus impacting the business sector.
