Australian Government Appoints New Head for the Signals Directorate

In a significant move, Abigail Bradshaw has been appointed as the new Director-General of the Australian Signals Directorate (ASD), effective from September 6, 2024. The announcement was made by the Australian Government on August 27, 2024, following approval by the Federal Executive Council.

Abigail Bradshaw has been serving as the Deputy Director-General of the ASD and Head of the ASD's Australian Cyber Security Centre (ACSC) since March 2020. During her tenure, she has led the ASD's response to nationally significant cyber security incidents and forged critical partnerships that underpin Australia's national resilience.

Bradshaw has also spearheaded the government's cyber security partnership with industry, playing a pivotal role in developing partnerships between the government and industries domestically and internationally.

The outgoing Director-General, Rachel Noble, has led the ASD with distinction for almost five years. Under her oversight, the ACSC experienced significant growth. Noble was also the first female to head an Australian statutory intelligence agency. She oversaw the development and delivery of ASD's transformation under the REDSPICE program, the largest-ever investment in Australia's signals intelligence and cyber capability.

As for the new head of the ACSC, a successor will be appointed in due course.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese congratulated Abigail Bradshaw on her appointment, praising her contributions to the ASD and her leadership in cyber security. The change in leadership at the ASD marks a new chapter in the agency's mission to safeguard Australia's digital landscape.

Despite the change, the commitment to maintaining Australia's cyber security remains unwavering, with Bradshaw's appointment signalling a continuation of the strong leadership and partnerships that have been established under Noble's tenure.
