The old Airbus transport dispute between Serengeti Park in Hodenhagen and Hannover Region has been ongoing for years, but recently, the latter has withdrawn its objections.

A Green Light for Airbus Transport to Serengeti Park: A Greener Solution, At Last!

After a lengthy dispute regarding the transportation of a decommissioned Airbus A310 to the Serengeti Park in South Heath, we've got some exciting news! The Region Hannover has cleared the way for the transport, declaring no further obstacles from a nature conservation perspective. The reason? A new method for lowering the aircraft's fuselage, ensuring protection for the trees in the landscape protection area.

This innovative technique, called "Reverse Rigging," involves lowering the fuselage from 6.80 meters to 5.90 meters and carefully securing tree branches to prevent damage during transit. A practical test with a scale model confirmed that this method can be carried out without causing harm to valuable trees in the protected area. Since no damage to the vegetation is anticipated, the need for a special permit under nature conservation law has been eliminated.

Serengeti Park's New Venture

The decommissioned Airbus, previously known as the "Kurt Schumacher" of the Bundeswehr, will soon be transformed into a restaurant within the park. Initially, the plan was to transport the fuselage over an approximately 50-kilometer route from the airport to Hodenhagen during the summer of 2022. The dismantled wings and tail fin have already been transported to the park.

The Region Hannover declined the park's appeal against the non-issued permit for nature conservation concerning the transport back in mid-November 2023.

Transport Details

Jens Palandt, the environmental director of the Region Hannover, stated, "After numerous discussions with the Serengeti Park, we've managed to find an environmentally friendly solution. That is now possible thanks to the new method." The transport can only occur after the conclusion of the breeding and nesting season, which is around October 1, due to the requirement for tree cuts outside the protected area.

Park owner Fabrizio Sepe shares the excitement, but before the transport can commence, administrative steps must be taken. These include submitting an application for heavy transport to the local authority in Langenhagen, constructing specialized equipment for transporting the aircraft, and obtaining a permit for crossing a track. Sepe said, "An exotic project like this - you never know what a genius idea might turn up next!"

  1. Vocational training programs could be implemented at Serengeti Park to equip local communities with the skills required for maintaining and managing the aircraft-turned-restaurant, thus contributing to the park's industry and finance, such as aircraft maintenance and hospitality services.
  2. As the transport of the Airbus to Serengeti Park demonstrates the successful application of innovative methods in transportation, this could potentially encourage other industries, like logistics and construction, to adopt similar eco-friendly practices, thereby reducing the negative impact on our environment.
