The Liffersmühle windmill, a historic landmark in the Rhineland area, has a rich history that spans centuries. Built in the early 19th century, likely around the 1800s or early 1800s, the windmill was a common sight in the region, serving the local agricultural community by milling grain into flour.

Timeline

The windmill operated for many decades, contributing to the local economy and food production. As with many traditional windmills, Liffersmühle likely saw a decline with the advent of industrial milling and modern technology in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

In 1840, the original wooden windmill was replaced by one made of stone. This stone windmill was later owned by Gerhard Wilhelm Liffers, who purchased it in 1879. The windmill thrived under Liffers' management, with business booming until a lightning strike destroyed it in 1918.

Despite the setback, Karl Liffers, a member of the Liffers family, started a yeast business after the destruction of the windmill. He served as a supplier to eleven bakeries in Willich.

The remains of the windmill were demolished in 1919, leaving only the base. However, the remaining stump of Liffers' mill, preserved when the mill tower was demolished, still stands today - in a private property's garden.

The Allies marched into Willich soon after, marking the end of World War II and potentially contributing to the windmill's demise.

Business

The Liffersmühle functioned primarily as a gristmill, processing local farmers' grains into flour, an essential service in an agricultural region. It operated as part of a local agrarian economy, contributing to both food production and local trade.

Current Status

Today, there is no operational Liffersmühle windmill in Willich. If any remnants exist, they are likely ruins or incorporated into other structures. The site may be remembered locally, but the windmill itself is no longer active or standing as a traditional windmill.

For detailed archival or local historical records, contacting Willich municipal archives or local historical societies could yield more precise dates and details about the Liffersmühle windmill's history.

In the period of Gerhard Wilhelm Liffers' management, the Liffersmühle windmill thrived, demonstrating a willingness to adapt to new business opportunities beyond milling by starting a yeast supply business. As the industry advanced and technology evolved, traditional windmills like Liffersmühle faced decline, though modern finance and archives can provide more details about its history.
