In a significant step towards reducing greenhouse gas emissions, Amazon is now using sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) supplied by Neste at both San Francisco International Airport (SFO) and Ontario International Airport (ONT) in California. This marks a milestone in SAF adoption, as Amazon becomes the first company to use SAF at ONT.

Amazon has agreed to purchase 7,500 metric tons of Neste's SAF for use by Amazon Air cargo operations at these key West Coast airports, through the end of 2025. The SAF can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80% in its purest form or 50% when blended with conventional jet fuel.

Neste, a Finland-based renewable fuels producer, provides solutions for sectors including road transport, aviation, and polymers and chemicals. The company's products include Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel and Neste MY Renewable Diesel, which are used in this partnership.

The fuel will be delivered to SFO via existing pipeline infrastructure and by renewable diesel-powered trucks from Neste's SAF terminal facilities in Los Angeles, in partnership with Diesel Direct. At ONT, the SAF will be delivered by renewable diesel-powered trucks, demonstrating Neste's commitment to sustainable transportation.

Amazon's use of Neste SAF is part of broader sustainability initiatives, including its achievement of powering its global operations with 100% renewable electricity and the use of renewable diesel alongside SAF in its vehicle fleets. Amazon is also a founding member of the Sustainable Aviation Buyers Alliance (SABA), further emphasizing its commitment to reducing aviation emissions.

Neste, the world’s leading producer of SAF, has recently expanded its production capacity significantly, especially at its Rotterdam refinery, enhancing its ability to supply large volumes of renewable fuels to customers like Amazon across the globe. The rollout of SAF at these California airports is a concrete example of how Neste’s scale supports the aviation industry’s decarbonization.

In addition to using SAF, Amazon is also sourcing lower-carbon aviation fuels and using SAF credits to reduce its airfreight emissions. The company aims to achieve net zero carbon emissions across its global operations by 2040. This partnership with Neste is a significant step towards achieving that goal.
