AirBaltic's CEO, Martin Gauss, steps down from his position

AirBaltic's CEO, Martin Gauss, has stepped down from his position.

AirBaltic, the Latvian national airline, has seen a significant shakeup in its leadership as Martin Gauss, the CEO since 2011, recently announced his resignation. The reasons for his departure are not publicly disclosed.

Under Gauss's leadership, AirBaltic underwent significant changes and experienced growth. He modernised the airline by completely renewing its fleet and expanding its route network, connecting to a wide range of destinations in Europe, the Middle East, North Africa, and the Caucasus region.

Gauss's departure comes amidst a dispute with the Latvian government, but the airline has expressed full confidence in its board, professional team, and management, and its core goals remain unchanged. AirBaltic continues to move towards a potential Initial Public Offering (IPO).

Pauls Cālītis, the Chief Operations Officer (COO) of AirBaltic, has taken over Gauss's duties on an interim basis. Cālītis has a 30-year career at AirBaltic, starting as a pilot in 1995. He was appointed COO in 2020 and has held leading roles at the airline, including overseeing flight operations.

The airline is also expanding its wet-lease business with the Lufthansa Group.

In other news, Astrid Röben, a journalist who has been a reporter at a magazine for over 20 years, specializes in covering airlines, airports, and travel stories. She has visited almost 70 countries in the course of her work and has published several books about airlines and flying.

AirBaltic serves around 130 routes from Riga, Tallinn, Vilnius, Tampere, and seasonally also Gran Canaria. Despite the recent changes, the airline announced the cancellation of 4,670 flights in the current summer flight plan due to unscheduled engine maintenance.

Vitolds Jakovļevs remains a board member and Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of AirBaltic. Andrejs Martinovs, the chairman of the supervisory board of AirBaltic, thanked Gauss for his leadership, commitment, and foresight since 2011.

The future of AirBaltic remains uncertain, but with its strong foundation and dedicated team, the airline is poised to continue its growth and success.
