BYD Introduces the Sealion 06: A New Addition to the Successful Ocean Lineup

BYD, the Chinese automaker, has unveiled the Sealion 06, the latest addition to its popular Ocean lineup. This new SUV joins the ranks of the Song Plus and Seagull, both of which have surpassed the milestone of 1 million units in sales.

The Sealion 06 comes in two main variants: the Sealion 06 DM-i, a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, and the Sealion 06 EV, a battery electric vehicle.

Pricing

The Sealion 06 DM-i starts at approximately 139,800 yuan (about USD 19,300) for the base model, with higher trims like the Pilot Pro and Pilot Plus costing around 146,800 yuan (about USD 20,250) and 156,800 yuan (about USD 21,650), respectively. The pricing for the EV variants is not explicitly detailed, but they are expected to be priced slightly higher due to the advanced technology and typical higher costs associated with electric vehicles.

Specifications

The Sealion 06 DM-i is equipped with a 1.5-liter engine producing 74 kW and a single electric motor delivering up to 160 kW. It offers battery packs with capacities of 18.3 kWh or 26.6 kWh, providing pure electric driving ranges of 121 km and 170 km, respectively. The Sealion 06 DM-i is a front-wheel drive vehicle.

On the other hand, the Sealion 06 EV offers single-motor configurations with peak power of 170 kW or 180 kW, and a dual-motor version with a 110 kW front motor and a 180 kW rear motor. It comes equipped with either a 65.28 kWh or 78.72 kWh battery pack, providing driving ranges of up to 605 km. The Sealion 06 EV is available in both rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive configurations.

Technology

The Sealion 06 DM-i utilizes BYD's fifth-generation DM (Dual Mode) hybrid technology, combining a petrol engine with an electric motor to reduce fuel consumption. The Sealion 06 EV, meanwhile, is built on BYD's e-Platform 3.0 Evo architecture, which supports advanced features like 800V fast charging.

The strong sales growth of the Sealion family is expected to become a new growth engine for BYD's Ocean lineup, which sold 1,030,820 vehicles in the first half of the year, representing a year-on-year increase of 38.98 percent. The Sealion family sold a record 34,757 units in June, contributing 9.08 percent to BYD Group's NEV sales of 382,585 units.

The Sealion 06 measures 4,810 mm in length, 1,920 mm in width, and 1,675 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,820 mm. The Sealion 06 DM-i comes in three variants, with starting prices of RMB 139,800, RMB 146,800, and RMB 156,800. The Sealion 06 EV also comes in three variants, with starting prices of RMB 143,800, RMB 153,800, and RMB 163,800.

The Sealion 07 EV was launched on May 10, 2024, and the Sealion family, including the Sealion 06, Sealion 07 EV, Sealion 07 DM-i, Sealion 05 DM-i, and Sealion 05 EV, has a starting price range of RMB 102,800 to RMB 239,800.

The Ocean lineup has accumulated total sales exceeding 5.2 million units to date. Another major series under the BYD brand, the Dynasty series, sold 920,323 vehicles in the first half of the year, a year-on-year increase of 17.70 percent.
