Wind Energy in Berlin: A Green Dilemma Between Forest Preservation and Renewable Expansion
- Let's get straight to it, mate!
Expanding the number of onshore wind power facilities beyond forested areas is being advocated for by Nabu. - Advocates propose expansion of wind energy projects away from forested areas (Nabu)
The Nature Conservation Union (Nabu) is protesting against the construction of wind turbines in Berlin's forests. Nabu Berlin believes that in place of forests, wind energy areas should be designated where turbines already exist nearby.
The proposed wind energy areas by Berlin's Senate are far too immense, stretching across almost 600 hectares. By 2032, each federal state must designate a total of 0.5 percent of its area to potential wind turbine sites. The Nabu predicts that this area can be found outside Berlin's forests as well.
"The Senate is missing the bloody target at the moment by surpassing the requirements of the federal government," said Rainer Altenkamp, the chairman of Nabu Berlin. "Given the public outrage over wind power in the forest, this is absolutely mind-boggling."
Nabu demands a smaller-scale planning approach
Since the new federal government will be evaluating the area targets for 2032, the Senate should not fulfill or even surpass the 2032 target, according to Altenkamp. "If an area is already designated as a wind energy area, it becomes a challenge to prevent the construction of wind turbines there."
Areas under consideration for wind turbines include the Krummendammer Heath in Treptow-Köpenick, the southern Grunewald in Steglitz-Zehlendorf, the Rieselfields Karolinenhöhe in Spandau, or Buchholz Nord in Pankow.

Additional Insights
The expansion of wind energy in Berlin is part of Germany's broader renewable energy strategy aimed at meeting the increasing electricity demand with sustainable sources. The Nature Conservation Union Germany and the federal government are engaged in discussions regarding the optimal method to achieve the wind energy expansion while addressing environmental and social concerns. The expansion of wind turbines outside forest regions is essential to mitigate ecological impacts. The federal government is planning a comprehensive review of the energy demand, security, grid expansion, and renewables rollout by mid-2025 to decide further renewable energy policies[1].
