Unleashing the Magnificence of Vienna's Cityscape: The 2021 Wiener Stadterneuerungspreis

At the heart of Austria's construction industry, the Vienna Urban Renewal Prize, snappily known as the Wiener Stadterneuerungspreis, was bestowed for the 37th time. This illustrious award shines a spotlight on the revitalization of existing buildings, focusing on factors like sustainability, historical preservation, and innovation.

The jury, a golden assembly of renowned construction experts, evaluated each renovated structure on criteria such as creativity, craftsmanship, energy efficiency, design aesthetics, and more. Impressed by the quality of submissions, they handed out nine prestigious awards in three categories: "Pioneer Achievement", "Vienna Master Achievement", and "Bravura Achievement". Each category had its share of gold, silver, and bronze laureates.

According to Christoph Ruck, master of the Landesinnung Bau of the Vienna Chamber of Commerce, the Wiener Stadterneuerungspreis is "an ode to the quality with which our city builds, renovates, and innovates". These awards serve as a beacon for sustainable, city-shaping development, he adds.

The Wiener Stadterneuerungspreis rolls around every two years. For the "Pioneer Achievement" category, projects with exceptional innovations or unique application of construction methods, digitalization, materials, technologies, sustainability, or new manufacturing techniques are celebrated.

Meanwhile, the "Vienna Master Achievement" category applauds the extraordinary endeavors of a Vienna builder—be it the application of vintage craft techniques, their innovative interpretation, or individual builders showcasing remarkable achievements.

Lastly, the "Bravura Achievement" category singles out large and small scale renovations that significantly enhance Vienna's architectural landscape and contribute positively to urban development, such as by promoting sustainable construction methods or barrier-free access. Ruck highlights that these projects embody the innovative spirit of the Vienna construction industry, and demonstrate respect for the city's historic fabric.
