Workers at the Oil Facilities in Augsburg, Bremerhaven
In the Bavarian city of Augsburg, heavy rainfall has caused flooding, with many basements also affected, despite the city largely being spared compared to other regions. To address the oil contamination issue, the oil damage specialists from the Technical Relief Agency (THW) have been deployed in the city.
On June 5th, volunteer helpers from the THW's Bremen and Lower Saxony regional association travelled to Augsburg to lend a hand. These volunteers are working at a newly established separation site to separate heating oil from contaminated water.
The interregional cooperation in Augsburg involves helpers coming from Bremen and Lower Saxony, as well as other regions. The specialist groups of the THW are uniformly structured nationwide, enabling this cooperation.
The two volunteers from Bremerhaven, who belong to the oil damage specialist group in their home local association, are coordinating a total of 45 oil damage specialists from other THW regional associations in Augsburg.
A computer-controlled separation plant provided by the THW in Bavaria is being used for the oil-water mixture separation. The goal of this work is to prevent contaminated water from entering the sewage systems and polluting the environment.

The situation remains critical in many areas of southern Germany, with heavy rainfall causing flooding in many parts. The THW's efforts in Augsburg are a testament to their commitment to helping those in need during times of crisis. The volunteers from Bremerhaven are expected to remain in the flood area until the beginning of next week.
