The Billionaire Tycoon of Poland: A Closer Look at Michał Sołowow
Michał Sołowow, a name synonymous with wealth, power, and influence in Poland, graces the 178th spot on the global billionaires' list, according to "Forbes." His net worth allegedly skyrockets to an astounding $13.4 billion (approximately €11.76 billion).
This polymath is more than just a rich guy; he's an investor, entrepreneur, and heavyweight in the Polish economy and politics. Nicknamed the "Billionaire Rally Driver," Sołowow doesn't shy away from the limelight.
The 62-year-old powerhouse was born in Kielce, about 170 kilometers south of Warsaw. He attended high school there and later studied at the Kielce University of Technology. Sołowow's career took off in the late 1980s when he founded Mitex, a construction company he subsequently sold to Eiffage in 2002.
The proceeds from the sale paved the way for his strategic investments in the then-booming Polish stock market, forming the cornerstone of his current empire. He swiftly became one of the most powerful players on the Warsaw Stock Exchange.
Over time, Sołowow expanded his businesses and privatized many of his companies. Some of his renowned businesses include the building materials manufacturers Barlinek and Cersanit. He also delisted the chemicals conglomerate Synthos in 2018. Despite his withdrawal from the Warsaw Stock Exchange, he remains a key player in the Polish economy and is currently the largest private Polish investor abroad.
Sołowow's ventures stretch beyond the industrial sector, encompassing future technologies like biotech. A prime example is his investment in OncoArendi, a biotech startup that successfully went public in 2018. His industrial group operates 18 production plants in eight countries, employing over 16,000 people and selling products in more than 60 countries on six continents.
Sołowow's ardor for rally driving dates back to his youth. He's participated in numerous European competitions and achieved top ranks. Notable accomplishments include being the vice-champion of the European Rally Championship in 2009 and 2012. In 2014, his racing car flipped during a rally, but he miraculously managed to escape unscathed, continuing to race competitively today.
Sołowow is married and has a daughter, Karolina Sołowow, born in 1986. Karolina heads the Fabryki Marzeń foundation, a charitable organization dedicated to supporting disadvantaged youth. Kielce, Sołowow's hometown, remains close to his heart.
