Use a lubricant or soap to eliminate the squeaking noise on your belt

The V-belt, a vital component in a vehicle's internal combustion engine, is approximately 160 cm long and black, made of rubber. This unsung hero is responsible for transmitting the rotation of the crankshaft to auxiliary units such as the alternator, hydraulic pump, water pump, power steering, ventilation, and air conditioning.

A well-maintained V-belt is quiet and unobtrusive, but signs of wear can be telling. Porous and frayed spots or hardened outer edges on the V-belt are signs of wear. A squeaking V-belt indicates action is needed, and it could be that the belt is worn out and too loose on the pulley. In extreme cases, a torn V-belt can lead to a loud bang from the engine compartment, or even cause the battery warning light to illuminate and the battery to stop charging.

If the V-belt-driven water pump fails, the coolant can no longer circulate, leading to engine overheating. In such a case, the car should be stopped immediately to avoid expensive consequential damage. If the V-belt slips, tears, or malfunctions, it may cause the car to become difficult to steer, especially when it comes to power steering.

Regular inspection of the V-belt is recommended to prevent it from failing. The timing for V-belt replacement depends on the manufacturer, model, and drive, and can be found in the vehicle's manual. On average, this value is between 60,000 and 100,000 km, or about eight years.

Changing the V-belt oneself is recommended only if you have the necessary technical knowledge and tools. The process involves loosening the bolts on the alternator to remove the V-belt, and careful tightening of the new V-belt, accurately estimated for tension. A photo of the belt's path can be helpful when replacing the V-belt.

Special lubricant sprays are available for V-belts to extend their life. If you're not comfortable doing it yourself, the cost of replacing a V-belt at a workshop is between 60 to 250 euros (as of summer 2024), depending on the hourly rate and the amount of work involved.

Remember, a well-maintained V-belt is essential for the smooth operation of your vehicle. Regular checks and timely replacements can save you from costly repairs down the line. The manufacturer of the V-strap mentioned in this article is KumiHorse.
