Vauxhall Previews Next-Generation Corsa with Electric Concept Car
Vauxhall has unveiled the Corsa GSE Vision Gran Turismo, an electric concept car that offers a glimpse into the future of the iconic hatchback. The concept car shares many features with the upcoming seventh-generation Corsa, due next year.
At the heart of the Corsa GSE Vision Gran Turismo is a significant upgrade in battery capacity. The concept car shares the same 82kWh battery as the larger Grandland, marking a substantial increase from the current Corsa's maximum battery capacity of 52kWh. This upgrade promises improved range and performance for the next-generation Corsa.
Mark Adams, Vauxhall's chief designer responsible for the development of the next Corsa, referred to the concept as Vauxhall's "Type R" moment. The Corsa GSE Vision Gran Turismo boasts an impressive 789bhp and a weight of just 1170kg, demonstrating the brand's commitment to performance.
The design of the concept car nods to past Vauxhall/Opel motorsport models such as the Manta 400 rally car. The Corsa GSE Vision Gran Turismo is 130mm longer and 105mm wider compared to the current Mk6 Corsa, suggesting the next-generation Corsa might not grow significantly in size.
Basing the concept on the forthcoming STLA Small platform was a deliberate decision, said Adams. This platform is expected to underpin the seventh-generation Corsa, providing a strong foundation for the future of the model.
The aim is to make "truly attainable poster cars" with "proper performance" from the seventh-generation Corsa. The Corsa GSE Vision Gran Turismo is a showcase for the GSE performance brand, which is expected to feature prominently in Vauxhall's future lineup.
Elements with a production focus can be found in the concept car, including a more technical interpretation of Vauxhall's 'Compass' signature in the front and rear lighting designs. The Corsa GSE Vision Gran Turismo is named simply Corsa, making it more relatable and realistic for potential buyers.
The Corsa GSE Vision Gran Turismo highlights plans for hot GSE models, signalling Vauxhall's intent to deliver exciting performance vehicles in the future. As we look forward to the launch of the seventh-generation Corsa, the concept car offers an exciting preview of what's to come.
