UK's Climate Goals Imperiled by Lack of Cycling, Walking Investment
The Science and Technology Committee has stressed the urgent need for a reduction in the number of vehicles to meet climate change targets. Meanwhile, Xavier Brice, the Chief Executive, has expressed disappointment in the lack of focus on walking and cycling in the recent Spending Round.
Brice, responding to the Spending Round announcement, highlighted the importance of investing in walking and cycling to reduce car usage and improve air quality. Despite an additional £30 million being allocated to tackle air quality issues, no funding was earmarked for the Department for Transport's cycling and walking initiatives. This oversight has led to concerns that the Cycling and Walking Investment Strategy's targets, such as doubling cycling trips, may not be met.
The committee, chaired by a parliamentarian whose name was not specified, emphasized the necessity of fewer vehicles, not just cleaner ones, to achieve government climate goals. Brice echoed this sentiment, calling for the UK Government to demonstrate commitment to cycling and walking targets.
The Spending Round's lack of funding for cycling and walking initiatives has raised concerns about meeting climate change targets. The Science and Technology Committee and Xavier Brice have both emphasized the need for a reduction in vehicle numbers to improve air quality and combat climate change.
