Trump Lampoons "Prime Minister Justin Trudeau" Following His Expressions of Tariff Reservations
President-elect Donald Trump jokingly labeled Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as a governor and referred to Canada as a state in a post on his Truth Social platform on Tuesday, following Trudeau's warning that a tariff battle between the two nations would lead to increased costs for American citizens.
Main Points
At an event organized by the Halifax Chamber of Commerce on Monday, the Canadian premier cautioned that Americans were "starting to realize the actual reality that tariffs on everything from Canada would make life quite costly."
Despite acknowledging Trump's planned 25% tariffs on all imports from Canada as catastrophic for Canada's economy, Trudeau also stated that such measures would also inflict significant hardship on Americans.
The Canadian prime minister also hinted at retaliating against unfair tariffs, much like they did eight years ago by imposing duties on some American imports after the initial Trump administration's tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum.
Trump apparently reacted to Trudeau's remarks with a mocking Truth Social post stating: "Had a wonderful dinner the other night with Governor Justin Trudeau of the magnificent state of Canada."
In the post, Trump expressed his anticipation to meet with the "Governor" again soon to further explore tariffs and trade, promising that the outcomes will bring "fantastic results" for everyone involved.

Background
In the past month, Trump announced his intention to impose 25% tariffs on all products from Mexico and Canada as one of his initial executive orders. Within his post, Trump asserted, "There appears to be an unstoppable Caravan from Mexico, consisting of thousands of people, attempting to breach our currently unsecured border." Trump argued the tariffs would remain in effect "until such time as illegal drugs, particularly Fentanyl, and all Illegal Aliens cease this Invasion of our Nation!"

Late last month, Trudeau held discussions with Trump at the Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida. In a Truth Social post, Trump described the meeting as "extremely productive" and added that they discussed topics such as the Fentanyl and Drug Crisis, the devastating consequences of Illegal Immigration, and Fair Trade Deals that prioritize American Workers while avoiding endangering the U.S. labor force. According to Fox News, Trump persuaded Trudeau to consider turning Canada into the 51st U.S. state if he believed that the proposed tariffs would negatively impact Canada's economy. Trump even proposed the idea that Trudeau could serve as the governor of this 51st state, despite his title as prime minister being more suitable.

Contrary to Trump's joking label of Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as a "governor" and referring to Canada as a "magnificent state" in a Truth Social post, sources suggest that during their discussions at Mar-a-Lago, Trump suggested to Trudeau that Canada could become the 51st U.S. state if the tariffs negatively impacted their economy, with Trudeau potentially serving as the governor.
