Transport users in NRW need to be vigilant: railway and motorway blockages set for the year 2025
Jammin' NRW: North Rhine-Westphalia Leads Germany in Gridlock
Heads up, drivers! North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW) remains the hotspot for traffic congestion in Germany. In 2023, an astounding 172,000 traffic jams were recorded in NRW, stretching over an eye-watering 271,000 kilometers. Nationwide, only 859,000 kilometers of traffic jams were documented, making almost a third of all traffic snarl-ups happen in NRW. And guess what? This trend is expected to persist in 2025, with plenty of roadworks and construction sites to keep the traffic grinding to a halt.
Highway Rapprochement
Here are a few notable road closures you should be aware of:
- A42 Crawl: The A42 between Essen-Nord and Bottrop-Süd will be off-limits from June 6 to 16. Why? They're expanding this section from four to six lanes, with a pipe bridge requiring a refresh. This stretch is already notorious for traffic jams, and the ADAC anticipates increased traffic in the following five years, making the highway expansion a priority.
- A43 Under Construction: The A43 between Bochum-Riemke and Herne-Eickel will be intermittently closed, though specific dates have yet to be determined.
- A52 Asphalt-A-Go-Go: From Essen-Ost to Essen-Rüttenscheid, you can expect new asphalt being laid in both directions this summer. That means the entire road will be shut down during the summer vacation, but it's a small price to pay for finally saying goodbye to the eight-year-long construction site around the Huttrop tunnel.
- A45 Bridge Shindig: The A45 near Lüdenscheid will remain closed in 2025 as well, with a new bridge being built. The closure will last five long years, causing additional headaches for drivers in the years to come.

Train Troubles Ahead
It's not just road commuters who need to keep their eyes on the calendar; rail passengers should too. Deutsche Bahn is busy modernizing Germany's railway network, with 40 crucial sections scheduled for a makeover by 2030. NRW's railway lines are in the mix.
Steel Tracks and Steam Clocks
Here's what rail travelers can expect in 2025:
- Essen-Dortmund Shuffle: The railway line connecting the Ruhr area cities of Essen and Dortmund will be closed from February 28 to April 28 and from September 5 to October 31. All trains will be rerouted, and even Bochum main station will see a complete halt during this period.
- Oberhausen-Emmerich Line: The Oberhausen-Emmerich line will be closed during the NRW Easter holidays (June 27 to August 23) and for two weeks in the autumn. This affects some important ICE lines, adding around 30 minutes to the Frankfurt-Cologne-Amsterdam ICE journey.
Regular major construction sites can lead to cancellations and delays. For the most current info, check out this Deutsche Bahn page.

Keep those gas pedals heavy, folks! The road ahead may be bumpy, but with a little planning and patience, we'll all make it through another year of construction chaos in NRW.
- Amidst the expanding Highway infrastructure in North Rhine-Westphalia (NRW), the automotive industry may encounter challenges due to the roadworks on the A42, A43, A52, and A45, potentially affecting transportation efficiency.
- With the finance sector's reliance on fast and reliable transportation, the public-transit sector in NRW faces disruptions due to the modernization of railway lines, such as the Essen-Dortmund and Oberhausen-Emmerich lines, which could impact the industry's productivity.
- Based on the prolonged road and rail construction in NRW, it would be prudent for the finance and automotive industries to explore alternative modes of transportation, such as investments in advanced infrastructure for electric vehicles or enhancement of the public transit network, to mitigate potential downtime and disruptions.
