Traffic Alert: FullBlockade on A63 at Mainz-Süd Junction Tonight
The ongoing renovation project at the Mainz-South interchange, a crucial junction connecting the Rhineland-Palatinate region to the Rhine-Main area, continues to face challenges. The Autobahn GmbH des Bundes, responsible for the project, terminated a contract with a construction company in autumn 2021 due to construction errors, resulting in delays and additional costs.
Despite the setbacks, the A60/A63 replacement project remains a priority. The A60, which remains closed at the interchange until Monday morning, is expected to reopen, subject to favorable weather conditions. Work on the A60 will continue during this period, including marking lanes.
The A63, on the other hand, will be partially closed from Friday, September 19, at 8 PM, and will reopen on Monday at 5 AM. The total cost of the renovation, including the additional costs due to the bridge concrete cracks, is still estimated at approximately 43 million euros.
It's worth noting that the bridge leading towards Bingen at the Mainz-South interchange is not affected by the cracks in the concrete structure of the bridge leading towards Frankfurt.
The Mainz-South interchange, where the A60 and A63 highways converge, is a significant traffic hub. On average, around 100,000 vehicles use the A60 daily, while approximately 80,000 use the A63. The completion of the ongoing construction is expected in early October.
Recently, comedian Lars Reichow joked about the traffic situation in Mainz during the "Mainz stays Mainz" Carnival session, referencing the ongoing construction at the Mainz-South interchange. His joke, met with a tired laugh from the audience, highlighted the ongoing disruption caused by the project.
Despite the delays and additional costs, the Mainz-South interchange renovation project is moving forward, aiming to improve the infrastructure and traffic flow in the region. The reopening of the A60, as scheduled, will be a significant step towards achieving this goal.
