Tesla set to launch budget-friendly vehicles by June 2025
Tesla, the leading player in the electric vehicle (EV) market, has reaffirmed its plans to introduce more affordable EVs in the first half of 2025. The upcoming models are expected to cost around US$30,000, a significant step towards making EVs more accessible.
The new EVs will incorporate aspects of Tesla's next-generation platform and elements from its current vehicle lineup. The list of technologies includes Giga-castings, Integrated Audio with Body Structure, 48-Volt Electrical Architecture, 800-Volt Battery System, Etherloop Communication Architecture, Bidirectional Charging (Powershare), Custom Laminated Glass, Adaptive Air Suspension, Steer-by-Wire, and Rear-Wheel Steering. Some of these technologies were first introduced in the Tesla Model 3, Tesla's futuristic pickup truck.
However, due to the affordable pricing, it's uncertain which premium features from the listed technologies will be included in the new models. Tesla has yet to confirm the exact nature of the upcoming Tesla Model Y.
Tesla has been the dominant force in the EV market for years, with vehicles like the Tesla Model S, Tesla Model 3, Tesla Model X, and Tesla Model Y. The launch of the Tesla Model Y further solidified its position. In 2023, Tesla signaled that more affordable models would be coming in the second half of 2025, but the timeline was moved ahead to the first half of the year in early 2024.
Affordability has been a hurdle for widespread adoption of Tesla's EVs. The upcoming affordable models are expected to implement advanced AI technologies from Tesla's Cortex AI supercomputer, regionalized supply chains including local battery production for cost efficiency, and innovative lightweight sustainable materials. However, the Tesla Model 3’s stainless steel exoskeleton will not be used, with alternative designs inspired by it likely to be adopted instead.
Tesla has accelerated its timeline by using both current and next-generation manufacturing techniques on existing production lines. The new affordable EVs are expected to be launched in the coming months, as per a recent report. The shareholder deck mentions that some of the Tesla Model Y's technologies will be incorporated into future vehicles.
Stay tuned for more updates as Tesla prepares to revolutionize the EV market once again with its upcoming affordable Tesla Model 3.
