Tesla reinstates direction indicator flasher in Model 3 vehicles for the Chinese market
In a series of updates, electric vehicle manufacturer Tesla has made significant changes to its Model 3 and Model Y vehicles in China, while also introducing a new longer-wheelbase version of the Model Y to boost sales and put pressure on local competitors.
Starting with the Model 3, Tesla launched an updated design in September 2023. The front end and interior received a revamp, and the windshield wiper control and gear shift stalk were replaced with controls on the central screen. However, the turn signal stalk was initially removed, causing a stir among customers. Tesla has since reintroduced the turn signal stalk as standard on all variants of the Model 3 in China, including rear-wheel drive, long-range rear-wheel drive, long-range all-wheel drive, and high-performance all-wheel drive. The optional turn signal stalk upgrade will be available in mid-September for those who prefer the traditional stalk.
The updated Model 3 design also removed the traditional turn signal stalk, replacing it with buttons on the steering wheel. For those who have already received their Model 3 vehicles without the turn signal stalk, Tesla offers it as a paid option through its mobile app, priced at RMB 2,499 ($350). The service for vehicles produced before February 7, 2025, without turn signal stalks will be available at a later date.
Meanwhile, Tesla's factory in Shanghai continues to produce the Model 3 sedan and Model Y for local customers and as an export hub. In July 2024, Model 3 retail sales in China amounted to 9,851 units, down 0.78 percent year-on-year. On the other hand, sales from January to July totaled 101,770 units, marking a 26.54 percent year-on-year increase.
To further boost sales, Tesla unveiled the Model Y L in China in July 2024, a longer-wheelbase version with a 6-seat configuration, extended cargo space, and a larger battery for a range of 751 km. Priced at RMB 339,000 (~$47,180), the Model Y L is aimed at challenging local competitors. Deliveries are expected to start in September 2025.
The Model Y also received an update in January 2024, with the SUV retaining the touchscreen-based gear shifting system. However, retail sales from January to July reached 202,257 units, down 17.15 percent year-on-year. In July 2024, sales dropped further to 30,766 units, marking a 15.24 percent year-on-year decrease and a 31.4 percent month-on-month drop.
Tesla's efforts to shake up its designs and introduce new models seem to be a strategic move to maintain its position in the competitive Chinese market. With the introduction of the Model Y L and the updates to the Model 3 and Model Y, Tesla is undoubtedly poised to continue its growth in China.
