Struggling D.C. Restaurant 'As You Are' Fights for Survival

In the heart of Washington D.C., 'As You Are', a queer bar with a heavily sapphic and trans customer base, is battling to stay afloat. Co-owner Rach Pike and her team have created a space for communities that often don't have their own or aren't prioritized in the spaces they're welcomed in. However, the current economic climate and the National Guard's presence in the city are posing significant challenges.

According to Rinata Gafarova, the General Manager of Belga Cafe, which has been on 8th Street for over 20 years, the National Guard's presence is contributing to a decline in foot traffic for some D.C. restaurants. 'As You Are' has experienced a 50-60% drop in business due to this factor.

Rinata Gafarova has also noted that returning to work has been a contributing factor for the low dining traffic in D.C. This, combined with less drinking at the bar and fewer tourists, has put a strain on 'As You Are' and other establishments.

Inflation is another challenge, affecting the cost of food and supplies for D.C. restaurants. Despite this, the owners of 'As You Are' are trying to avoid raising prices to stay true to their purpose. They are concerned that doing so could serve a community they didn't open for.

To keep their doors open, 'As You Are' has launched a GoFundMe campaign. The DC Council has also amended the voter-approved Initiative 82, phasing out the tipped minimum wage earlier this summer. This change, while intended to help restaurants, could further impact 'As You Are' due to its unique customer base.

The federal takeover of the Metropolitan Police Department by President Donald Trump has ended, but the National Guard's presence in Washington has continued until at least November. As the city navigates these challenges, businesses like 'As You Are' are fighting for their lives.
