Spanish PM's Party Hit by Corruption Scandals Involving EU Funds
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez's Socialist Party is grappling with multiple corruption scandals. These stem from the Koldo García case, involving alleged Covid-19 pandemic-related corruption, and have drawn the attention of European authorities.
Four corruption probes in Spain, including those involving Sánchez's inner circle, have received EU funds. The European Public Prosecutor's Office (EPPO) and the EU's anti-fraud office (OLAF) are monitoring these cases. One probe centres on the 2020 multi-million bailout for Plus Ultra, with portions being EU-backed. Another case involves allegations of influence-peddling by Sánchez's wife, Begona Gómez, securing €8.3 million in contracts. His brother, David Sánchez, faces charges related to his EU-funded appointment at the Diputación de Badajoz. Additionally, an investigation targets former PSOE officials for corruption linked to €400 million in public works contracts, partly funded by EU sources. Misuse of funds could lead to their suspension or recovery.
The corruption scandals surrounding the Spanish Socialists and those close to Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez have raised concerns about the possible misuse of European Union funds in Spain. European authorities are closely monitoring the situation, with the potential for further action if abuses are confirmed.
