Task Force Formed to Improve Train Service Reliability in Singapore

In a bid to enhance the reliability of the train service and reduce service disruptions, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) and train operators SMRT and SBS Transit have joined forces to establish a Rail Reliability Task Force. The formation of this task force was announced on September 19.

The task force, chaired by LTA's chief executive Ng Lang, will consist of the chief executives of both train operators and technical specialists. Its primary objective is to review recent incidents of service disruptions, study ways to speed up service recovery during breakdowns, and recommend improvements to the operations, maintenance, and staff training for the train service.

The task force will also consider bringing forward renewal works on the North East Line power system and propose signalling upgrades for the North East and Circle lines. In addition, it will carry out audits of critical systems to ensure their efficiency and effectiveness.

The government has shown its commitment to this initiative by allocating an additional S$1 billion over five years for train service strengthening and skill upgrading. The final recommendations from the task force are due by the end of the year, and the task force's findings will be reported regularly to Acting Transport Minister Jeffrey Siow.

SMRT has emphasised that recent disruptions were unrelated incidents, not systemic faults. The National Transport Workers' Union has voiced its support for the initiative, expressing confidence that the task force will help improve the train service's reliability and service quality.

The task force will be based in Singapore, reflecting the government's focus on addressing local issues and improving the lives of its citizens. With the task force's hard work and dedication, commuters in Singapore can look forward to a more reliable and efficient train service in the future.
