Review of Tesla Model Y, Launch of Mercedes-AMG CLE 53 Coupe – August 12 News
Tesla Model Y Makes Debut in India, Receives Mixed Reviews
Tesla, the American electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer, has officially entered the Indian market with its Model Y. The SUV has been receiving generally positive reviews, but some drawbacks have been noted.
The Model Y offers a real-world range of between 400 km and 500 km under Indian conditions. It boasts impressive instant torque and a near-silent drive, making it quick off the line. However, some reviewers have noted a firm ride quality and the need for adjustment to its touchscreen-only controls.
The design of the Model Y is clean and aerodynamic, with subtle aero touches, flush door handles, a coupe-like silhouette, and an expansive glass roof. While some find the minimalist exterior and interior to be plain, others appreciate the unique tail-lights. The cabin, dominated by a single large central touchscreen, offers a premium feel with high-quality materials and soft-touch surfaces. The rear seats accommodate three adults comfortably, even tall passengers, thanks to a flat rear floor and spacious glass roof.
The Model Y is priced from about Rs 59.89 lakh (ex-showroom), available in RWD and Long-range RWD versions. Some colour choices carry additional costs, with only Stealth Grey offered free.
Despite the positive reception, the Model Y could face challenges adapting fully to local conditions and consumer expectations. The minimalist approach may not appeal to those used to more traditional controls, and questions have been raised about range, charging infrastructure, and how well Tesla’s autonomous driving features adapt to Indian traffic chaos.
Meanwhile, Citroen has launched the C3X in India, which is based on the standard Citroen C3 and sits above the standard model range. The C3X is part of Citroen's Citroen 2.0 - "Shift Into the New" strategy and comes with enhanced features and amenities. The C3X has been launched with a starting price of ₹7.91 lakh (ex-showroom).
In other news, the Supreme Court has ordered a halt on coercive action against diesel vehicles over 10 years old and petrol vehicles over 15 years old in Delhi-NCR until further orders. Fuel stations have been directed to stop supplying fuel to these vehicles, and they are required to be scrapped in line with a 2018 Supreme Court ruling.
MG has started deliveries for the Cyberster, an electric two-door convertible, in India. The Cyberster features electric scissor doors and modern amenities, making it a distinctive option in the Indian market.
Finally, Yezdi Motorcycles has introduced the updated Roadster. The 2022 Yezdi Roadster comes with comprehensive upgrades and is priced at ₹2.10 lakh (ex-showroom) onwards.
In a unique gesture, the first MG Cyberster was presented to its owner as a surprise by his family. The Citroen C3X launch and the Tesla Model Y's debut in Mumbai mark the entry of new players in the Indian automotive market, offering consumers a wider range of choices.
