Retail chain JOANN to shutter 61 stores in California, 500 across the nation
Joann Fabrics Exits California Retail Market After Bankruptcy
Joann Fabrics, a well-known craft store chain with a nearly century-long retail presence, has announced the closure of all its stores nationwide, including many locations in California. This marks a significant shift as the company exits the California retail market following its bankruptcy and mass closures.
The company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection for the second time in less than a year, leading to the closure of around 500 stores across the United States. By May 2025, Joann Fabrics had closed all of its remaining stores, including those in Glendale, La Cañada Flintridge, and Huntington Beach. The company's future plans do not include continuing retail operations in California or elsewhere, as it looks to shrink dramatically due to slumping sales, loss of market share, and financial difficulties.
Analysts have indicated that recovery without a buyout appears unlikely, with the company becoming a much smaller business or exiting retail altogether.
Meanwhile, in a separate development, the Columbus, Ohio-based clothing retailer Express plans to close 95 locations nationwide, including underperforming stores. The closure will affect the area from Artesia to Alondra in Santa Fe Springs, with going-out-of-business sales beginning on December 2. The closure is part of the first half of the new Valley View Ave. Bridge construction project.
The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) announced a 91-hour closure of Valley View Ave. between Artesia Blvd. and Alondra Blvd. for retaining wall construction, scheduled to take place in early October.
In another related news, Transform Holdco has announced the closure of 96 Sears and Kmart stores nationwide. The closure is intended to allow for the construction of the new Valley View Ave. Bridge, as part of an overall plan to close 196 stores.
These closures highlight the ongoing challenges faced by traditional brick-and-mortar retailers as they compete with online retailers and other competitors. As these retail giants restructure, it remains to be seen how the retail landscape will continue to evolve in the coming years.
