Regulation of Ticket Pricing in Germany to Commence in 2027
The future pricing mechanism for the Germany ticket has received a significant boost, with the Transport Ministers' Conference set to decide on the matter by autumn 2025. This development aims to provide clarity for both users and transport companies regarding the Ticketmaster's price.
The announcement was made by Bavaria's Transport Minister Christian Bernreiter (CSU) following the Transport Ministers' Conference in Munich. According to Bernreiter, the decision to change the Germany ticket price mechanism was unanimous among all German federal states.
The federal government has promised funds for the Germany ticket, despite tight budgets. In fact, it will provide 1.5 billion euros per year for the ticket until 2030. The states will also contribute 1.5 billion euros annually, ensuring a total funding of 3 billion euros annually until 2030.
Stefan Schnorr, State Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Transport, expressed his satisfaction with the day's events, stating that there is now clarity that the ticket will continue permanently. He also highlighted that the ticket's price from 2027 will be based on a cost index developed by the Transport Ministers' Conference.
The cost index will take factors such as wage and energy costs into account, providing more predictability for users and transport companies. This move is intended to alleviate the revenue losses faced by transport companies due to more expensive previous subscriptions.
The nationwide valid Germany ticket price for local transport will increase to 63 euros from January 1, 2026. However, from 2027, the price will be determined based on the cost index, ending the political price-finding for the Germany ticket.
With this decision, there will be no more uncertainty about financing for the Germany ticket. The political price-finding for the Germany ticket will soon come to an end, bringing a sense of relief to all parties involved.
