Regensburg: Two fresh solar power plants generate eco-friendly solar energy
Solar Panels Yield Clean Energy at Donau-Arena and Westbad in Regensburg
Located on the rooftops of both the Donau-Arena and the Westbad's entrance hall, photovoltaic systems have been supplying solar power since April 2025 and February 2025, respectively. The Donau-Arena's 3,706 square meter PV system generates around 5,500 kWh per day, with an annual output of approximately 924,000 kWh—covering about 30% of the arena's energy needs while saving around 401 tons of CO2. The Westbad's smaller 1,105 square meter setup generates about 1,600 kWh daily, with a yearly output of around 240,000 kWh, meeting about 10% of the facility's energy requirements and reducing emissions by about 60 tons.
Manfred Koller, CEO of Regensburg City Works, emphasizes the importance of locally generated renewable energy for environmental protection and bolstering the local economy. These two systems, spanning a total of 4,811 square meters, generate around 1.16 million kWh of clean electricity annually, marking a step forward in the city's push towards more sustainable energy solutions.
Regensburg City Works aims to operate largely climate-neutral by 2035, contributing to broader regional initiatives aimed at achieving climate neutrality, improving urban mobility, and facilitating energy transition across Central Europe. The European Union's long-term strategy for carbon neutrality by 2050 and targets for public transport decarbonization are likely influencing this direction, with a shift away from fossil fuels, investment in alternative drive systems, and expansion of green energy infrastructure.
While the specific plans and progress of Regensburg City Works towards this climate-neutral goal remain to be seen, ongoing projects highlight the collective efforts of cities and municipal utilities to combat climate change.
- Other cities and municipalities could follow Regensburg's lead in the environmental-science field, considering the success of the renewable-energy industry in the city, as they too strive for carbon neutrality.
- As the push towards renewable energy continues, Regensburg City Works is considering investing in finance opportunities within the environmental-science sector, planning to expand their renewable-energy infrastructure.
- The finance sector plays a crucial role in the growth of the renewable-energy industry, providing the necessary funding for the construction of projects such as the solar panels at the Donau-Arena and Westbad, playing a significant part in reducing carbon emissions.
