The MINI Cooper S, available in both three-door and five-door models, is a popular choice for those seeking a thrilling driving experience. However, as the automotive industry moves towards electrification, the future of these iconic hot hatches is uncertain.

In terms of performance, the five-door MINI Cooper S takes 0.2 seconds longer than its three-door counterpart to reach 62 mph (100 km/h). Both models, equipped with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, offer a top speed of 150 mph (242 km/h). Unfortunately, a manual gearbox is not an option for the Cooper S models.

The hot hatch duo from MINI, the F66 and F65 models, are powered by a 2.0-liter turbo engine, delivering 201 hp and 300 Nm (221 lb-ft) of torque. The Cooper S version of the latest-generation MINI hatchback has been seen in John Cooper Works trim, although it is different from the true JCW performance models.

As we approach the end of the decade, the era for combustion engine MINI hot hatches is nearing its end. Traditional hot hatches like those from MINI are becoming extinct due to the 2035 ban on new gas engines in Europe. The MINI brand initially aimed to go fully electric by the end of the decade, but it has since abandoned this goal, leaving a few years for buyers to purchase a MINI with a combustion engine before the brand goes electric.

The shift to rear-driven electric MINIs would break with tradition but accentuate the brand's trademark go-kart handling. The BMW Group's Neue Klasse platform, which supports only rear- and all-wheel-drive, suggests that electric MINIs might become rear-driven. It is likely that electric MINIs will be the ones to get a tail-happy setup, as only electric models are expected to receive this treatment.

Despite the lack of publicly available information about the people currently responsible for the development of the latest electronic MINI-Pocket Rocket models, it is clear that the MINI Cooper S hot hatches are undergoing a significant transformation. As the industry moves towards electrification, the MINI brand is poised to adapt and continue to deliver the exciting driving experiences its fans have come to expect.
