Railway kilometers on Section 4 Ales̝d to Hungarian border, supervised by Egis, successfully inaugurated, marking a significant achievement
News Article: Rapid Progress on Cluj-Napoca to Hungarian Border Railway Rehabilitation
The Cluj-Napoca to Hungarian border railway line rehabilitation project is making significant strides, with Lot 4, the crucial final section towards enhancing international rail connectivity, progressing steadily.
Current Status of Lot 4 (Aleşd – Hungarian Border):
The rehabilitation contract for Lot 4 has been awarded, and construction work has commenced. The project focuses on upgrading the track to allow speeds up to 160 km/h, renewing the track structure, modernizing signaling systems, and improving stations and related infrastructure. As of early 2025, significant civil works including track renewal and electrical installations are underway, though some delays have been reported due to supply chain challenges and regulatory approvals.
Despite these challenges, the first 7 km of new railway within Lot 4 Aleșd - Hungarian Border have been commissioned, marking a milestone in the project. The reopened segment is located between Episcopia Bihor and the Hungarian Border.
Timeline for Completion:
Initially, plans targeted completion around late 2023 or early 2024. However, due to the aforementioned delays, the revised schedule projects finalization of the Lot 4 works by late 2025. Upon completing Lot 4, the entire Cluj-Napoca – Oradea – Episcopia Bihor line will be fully rehabilitated, significantly reducing travel times and improving service reliability on this important corridor.
Coordination and Supervision:
For the 100 km sections between Poieni - Ales̜d - Frontiera Ungaria, representing Lot 3 and Lot 4, Egis supervises and coordinates contractors' design and build activities. Egis, a global firm, has been awarded by the National Railway Company "C.F.R."- S.A. to provide consultancy and supervision services for electrification and rehabilitation works on sections 3 Poieni - Aleșd and 4 Aleșd - Hungary Border of the Cluj Napoca - Oradea - Episcopia Bihor railway line.
Safety and Efficiency:
The works on Lot 4 are carried out under traffic, requiring complex organization and temporary works to maintain circulation. The completed works on LOT 4 Aleșd - Border are from km 0+660.74 to km 7+088.32 and include embankments, railway superstructure, catenary poles and anchors, signaling cables, 13 underpasses, and 2 culverts.
Upon completion, the maximum speeds will be 160 km/h for passenger trains and 120 km/h for freight trains, with improved travel conditions, safety, and interoperability with ITS. The rehabilitated section allows the resumption of railway traffic with restrictions (maximum speed 50 km/h) until the completion of the entire lot.
Social Equity and Environmental Sustainability:
The project advances social equity by improving accessibility for people with disabilities and ensuring safe transit for all users. It also supports environmental sustainability by promoting efficient transport and reducing emissions.
For the most precise and up-to-date details, monitoring announcements from the Romanian Railway Authority (CFR SA) or the Ministry of Transport would be advisable, as project timelines can be subject to change.
