Railway construction between Hamburg and Hannover moves forward, no alternative plans in sight

The Bundestag's upcoming decision on a new railway route between Hamburg and Hannover could determine the news today of the expansion project, as the German Railway advocates for the construction of a new route while the Lower Saxony state government opposes it. German Railway has stated unequivocally that there is no alternative to the planned new construction, citing the new route as the only viable option with a good cost-benefit index. If approved, the new railway route is expected to be completed in the 2030s. However, the Lower Saxony state government, led by Minister President Olaf Lies and Transport Minister Grant Hendrik Tonne, has expressed its opposition to the proposed new route. The state government prefers the expansion of existing routes, as agreed upon in 2015, rather than the new construction between Hamburg and Hannover. The Mayor of Hannover, Belit Onay, supports the new railway route, while Fridays for Future and other organizations, including the German Traffic Club (VCD), have demonstrated in Hannover for the new route. Around 80 participants gathered for a rally in front of the Old Town Hall on Thursday, according to the organizer. The Bundestag is expected to make a decision on the new railway route later this year. If the Bundestag approves the new construction, German Railway will start implementing it immediately. Conversely, if the Bundestag does not agree to the new construction, there will be no expansion of the route between Hamburg and Hannover. The German federal state opposing the construction of a new railway line between Hamburg and Hanover is Lower Saxony (Niedersachsen). The spokesman for German Railway has stated that they will begin implementing the new route immediately if it is approved by the Bundestag. As the decision date approaches, all eyes are on the Bundestag as they weigh the potential benefits and drawbacks of the new railway route. The outcome could significantly impact the transportation landscape between Hamburg and Hannover, and potentially set a precedent for future infrastructure projects in Germany.
