Rail Service Reliability Task Force to be Established: LTA and Train Operators Collaborating to Address Service Disturbances

In a bid to enhance the reliability of the Land Transport Authority (LTA), SMRT, and SBS Transit, a rail reliability task force has been established in Singapore. The task force, which includes representatives from the LTA, SMRT, and SBS Transit, will be chaired by the LTA's chief executive, Ng Lang.

The primary objective of the task force is to address service disruptions and develop immediate solutions to improve rail reliability. To achieve this, the task force will conduct full technical audits of critical systems' maintenance and operations, focusing on asset conditions, maintenance processes, operational and redundancy procedures, staff training, and competency.

The task force will also review recent train disruption incidents to identify components that are approaching end-of-life and require replacement, upgrading, or increased maintenance. One area of particular focus will be the North East Line (NEL) power system, with the task force considering accelerating the renewal program for this system.

In addition to technical audits, the task force will look into improving service recovery speeds. This includes reducing the number of detrainments that impact service recovery time, without compromising commuter safety. The task force will also review ways to strengthen the signalling system for both the NEL and Circle Line (CCL) in the short term.

The task force will be composed of technical specialists from across the rail sector, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of the issues at hand. The SMRT Group CEO, Ngien Hoon Ping, and SBS Transit Group CEO, Jeffrey Sim, will also be part of the task force, bringing their respective expertise to the table.

The task force will report its findings to Acting Transport Minister Jeffrey Siow regularly. The exact time when the final recommendations of the supervisory body will be submitted is not specified in the available information, but the task force has committed to submitting its final recommendations by the end of the year.

The formation of this rail reliability task force is a significant step towards improving the reliability of Singapore's public transport system. By addressing service disruptions and improving service recovery processes, the task force aims to reduce the impact of service delays on commuters, ultimately providing a more reliable and efficient public transport system for all.
