Production of Lada vehicles by AutoVAZ is set to decrease in 2025.
In the ever-evolving landscape of Russia's car market, some notable shifts have emerged in August 2025.
The St. Petersburg plant, a significant player in the industry, is projected to produce more than 300,000 cars this year, a figure that may see a slight adjustment as the stock market today begins to pick up, with production potentially around 10% more or less than the projected figure. This production plan, approved last year for approximately 500,000 cars, will be adjusted to reflect the current stock market conditions.
Despite the anticipated decrease in production, Lada maintained its leadership in August, accounting for 22.6% of the total sales with 27,600 units sold. However, Maxim Sokolov, speaking at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) in 2025, announced that Lada sales could decrease by 20-25% in 2025, suggesting a significant reduction in Lada's production numbers.
Meanwhile, foreign brands have made significant strides in the Russian market. Haval took the top spot among foreign brands in August, with an impressive 16,000 units sold. Chery followed closely behind with 11,000 units sold, while Geely placed third with 8,690 units sold.
These figures paint a picture of a market in transition, with foreign brands gaining ground and domestic brands adjusting their production plans to meet the changing demands.
In August 2025, a total of 122,200 new light vehicles were sold in Russia, marking a 17.6% decrease compared to August 2024. This contraction in the market is reflected in the total number of new vehicle registrations until mid-2025, which stands at around 646,700, indicating a substantial impact on production volumes.
As the year progresses, the exact production numbers for the St. Petersburg plant and other manufacturers will become clearer. The car industry in Russia continues to evolve, and these shifts in the market are indicative of the changes that lie ahead.
