Chennai Metro Rail Project Moves Forward with Estimated Cost of Rs 9,928 Crore

The Chennai Metro Rail project, aimed at easing congestion along the Outer Ring Road corridor and boosting economic growth in north-west Chennai, is set to cost approximately Rs 9,928 crore according to a government order issued on April 28 [1][4].

Cost and Land Acquisition

The total construction cost is estimated at around Rs 9,744 crore, which includes the integration of three flyovers at key junctions, such as Ambattur Industrial Estate bus terminus [4]. The Tamil Nadu government has sanctioned Rs 2,442 crore specifically for preparatory works, primarily for land acquisition costing Rs 2,204 crore, along with utility shifting, surveys, tree replanting, and traffic management activities [1][4].

Route and Stations

The corridor will have 19 elevated stations stretching from Koyambedu to Pattabhiram. It will serve major emerging residential and commercial zones such as Thirumazhisai, Ambattur, Kundrathur, Tiruvallur, Avadi, and Poonamallee. Important interchanges will be available at Avadi railway station and Ambattur bus terminus, enhancing multimodal connectivity and reducing travel times [1].

Flyover Construction

Three flyovers will be constructed for better traffic integration, specifically mentioned at the Ambattur Industrial Estate bus terminus junction to ease congestion and facilitate smooth metro rail integration [4].

Project Status and Strategic Significance

While the Detailed Project Report (DPR) was submitted in February, the project awaits central government clearance. The metro line is expected to act as a development catalyst for Chennai’s north-west region, linking to the newly inaugurated Rs 330 crore Tidel IT Park at Pattabhiram, which aims to develop the area’s economic profile to rival southern IT corridors like Taramani and Coimbatore [1]. Transit-oriented development principles are emphasized to integrate transport and land-use policies effectively, potentially reshaping employment and residential landscapes in the corridor [1].

The Tamil Nadu government is proactively pushing preparatory activities, including land acquisition and detailed mapping, positioning the project for expedited execution upon federal clearance [1][4]. The corridor aligns well with Chennai’s broader transport infrastructure investments to support urban expansion and relieve traffic choke points surrounding the Outer Ring Road.

In May, the State government gave its in-principle approval for providing connectivity of the metro rail from Koyambedu to Pattabiram [2]. The government has recommended the Chennai Metro Rail project to the Centre for its approval and funding on an equity sharing basis [3].
