Sparbanken in the North Slash Branches and Cash Machines
North-based Sparkassen institutions cut down branches and automated teller machines (ATMs) - Northern savings banks trim down branch and ATM networks
Take a stroll through Schleswig-Holstein, and you'll notice a subtle change: fewer Sparbanken branches and cash machines. Last year, they trimmed down their numero uno - from 348 to 337 branches. The Sparkassen and Giroverband for Schleswig-Holstein, the guys in charge, spilled the tea on this declining trend. Of the remaining branches, 196 are still bustling with human presence. The number of cash machines also took a hit, plummeting from 703 to 679 last year. They blame it on altered consumer behavior and digital evolution.
The Sparbanken's business in Schleswig-Holstein stayed afloat last year, with a flourishing credit business. Customer loans held steady at around 38.4 billion euros, not much different from the previous year. However, loan promises experienced a near-17% surge, hitting over 4.4 billion euros. This growth included almost 1.3 billion euros for private residential construction loans and around 1.1 billion euros for commercial residential construction loans. These sectors saw a whopping 30% and 24% increase respectively.
Oliver Stolz, Sparkassen and Giroverband Schleswig-Holstein's big cheese, isn't exactly gung-ho about Germany's current economic situation. He did, however, see some beacon of hope and an upward swing on the horizon.
He pointed to the decisions on the infrastructure and defense special funds, as well as the prospects of the coalition agreement between the Union and the SPD. "Both special funds could provide significant jump-starters for an economic resurgence, if there's a will for deregulation, making investments more predictable and favorable," Stolz opined.
Stolz also praised the growing interest of customers in value paper savings. The securities business witnessed a nearly 30% boost last year, reaching 5.99 billion euros. Stolz attributed this boom to the financial advice provided by Sparbanken during the years of zero and low interest rates. The workforce also saw a swell, climbing from 6,188 to 6,268 employees.
