New Dane County Juvenile Detention Center Moves Closer to Approval
A new juvenile detention center in Dane County has taken a significant step towards full state approval. GEI Consultants, who conducted an environmental assessment, reported no substantial impacts at a public meeting on Wednesday.
The proposed news center, part of Governor Evers' plan to reduce youth recidivism, will replace larger facilities like Lincoln Hill and Copper Lake. It will be built on the border of Fitchburg and Oregon, near two existing correctional facilities.
The new center will offer mental and physical health resources, education, physical activity, and counseling. It will also have a significantly smaller staff to youth ratio compared to larger facilities. The Dane County Correctional Facility, with 40 beds, will provide a more restorative environment for young offenders.
GEI Consultants presented their findings at a public meeting, with no attendees speaking. However, public comments about the potential impacts of the proposed detention center are still being accepted until October 10.
If approved, the new juvenile detention center in Dane County will provide a more supportive environment for young offenders. The center, with its focus on restorative practices, aims to decrease youth recidivism rates. For more information or to submit a comment, visit the provided link.
