Fürth City Acquires Solar Plant for a Symbolic Euro

In a significant move towards sustainable energy, the city of Fürth has purchased the Solar Hill in Atzenhof for one euro. The acquisition, announced by the city on Friday, aims to ensure the continued operation of the solar facilities currently on the artificial hill since 2003.

The solar plant comprises 5,760 modules spread over an area of 1.7 hectares. It has been among the 50 largest photovoltaic plants globally since its commissioning and has consistently contributed to power generation. Annually, it produces energy enough to support around 250 households and saves between 370 and 670 tons of CO2.

A citizen participation model financed a significant portion of the project, with 150 private investors and the city itself contributing. The project, in its 19 years of operation, has generated net profits of over 700,000 euros.

The decision to acquire Solar Hill was made by the Fürth city council on May 28. The city aims to prevent dismantling of the facilities once the 20-year subsidy under the Renewable Energy Act (EEG) expires. Proceeds from the photovoltaic plant will support educational and other institutions within the city.

Apart from its energy production role, the Solar Hill has become a recreational area and a habitat for over 254 plant species. At 348 meters above sea level, it towers around 57 meters above the surrounding landscape, offering panoramic views over Fürth.

The acquisition represents a significant step towards increased control and financial stability for the solar facilities. The city can now integrate Solar Hill into its broader energy strategy, enhancing community engagement and education about renewable energy. Additionally, it presents an opportunity for long-term planning and commitment to renewable energy goals, essential for achieving sustainability objectives.

  1. The acquisition of Solar Hill by the Furth city council opens up opportunities for integrating this renewable-energy source into the city's broader environmental-science and finance strategies.
  2. With its status as one of the 50 largest photovoltaic plants globally, the Solar Hill in Furth contributes significantly to the other renewable-energy industry, generating energy for approximately 250 households while saving tons of CO2 annually.
  3. Proceeds from the Solar Hill photovoltaic plant will not only support the continued operation of the facilities but also contribute to funding educational and other institutions within the city, demonstrating the plant's importance to the environmental-science, industry, and finance sectors of Furth.
