Mine disaster in Central Kazakhstan claims seven lives

Seventeen February, Astana - A devastating rock slide in the Zhomart mine, located in Kazakhstan's Ulytau Region's Zhanaarka district, claimed the lives of seven mine workers, as reported by the Emergency Situations Ministry.

Authorities have retrieved and commenced forensic investigations on the recovered bodies. The regional government has vowed to offer psychological and social support to the families of the deceased.

As of now, the cause of the collapse remains unspecified in the ministry's statements. Deputy Prime Minister Kanat Bozumbayev is in the region, overseeing the emergency response and assessing the situation, as reported by primeminister.kz.

Expressing his condolences, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev directed the government to conduct a comprehensive investigation into the incident. In wake of a similar tragedy in the same region, Tokayev emphasized the need for improved labor safety standards.

In accordance with a statement published on its official website, mining conglomerate Kazakhmys — a major global producer of copper — described the occurrence as an unusual incident for their mines. A special commission has been established to investigate the circumstances and causes of the accident.

The mining company pledged a lump-sum payment, equivalent to ten times the average annual salary of the employee, together with coverage of funeral expenses. Additionally, they promised monthly payments for the loss of a breadwinner, coverage of children’s education costs, repayment of loans and debts held by the deceased workers, and other forms of assistance based on the requests of the victims' families.

The region's governor, Dastan Ryspekov, expressed his sympathy for the bereaved families, noting the collective grief and shock stemming from the tragedy.
