Maruti Suzuki Aims to Dispatch 35% of Vehicles by Rail by 2030-31
Maruti Suzuki, India's leading carmaker, is boosting its use of railways for vehicle transportation. By 2030-31, it aims to dispatch 35% of its cars by rail. The company has already opened an in-plant railway siding at its Gujarat plant, with more planned.
Maruti Suzuki's rail transportation has surged from 65,700 cars in FY 2014-15 to 447,750 in FY 2023-24. This shift has led to a significant reduction in emissions and fuel consumption. The company has introduced dedicated wagons for vehicle rail logistics and plans to expand this network.
The carmaker has set a target to increase its rail usage to 35% by FY 2030-31. It is currently at 21.5%. Maruti Suzuki sold 2,130,000 units in the last financial year, with 1,790,000 sold in India and over 283,000 exported. It aims to enhance efficiency and sustainability by shifting more logistics from road to rail.
