Major Straw Bale Fire in Labbeck Under Control, Asbestos Concerns Emerge
A major fire incident occurred in Labbeck on Saturday, 06.09.2025, involving a straw bale fire in a covered barn. The Sonsbeck fire department worked tirelessly to control the blaze and ensure public safety.
The fire, which engulfed several hundred round bales over an area of approximately 15m x 60m, was successfully brought under control by midday. The fire department employed water cannons not only to combat the flames but also to bind potentially present asbestos fibers, as confirmed by the State Office for Nature, Environment and Climate (LANUK NRW). The roof samples tested positive for asbestos, but fortunately, no injuries were reported, and a neighboring poultry shed was protected.
The Sonsbeck fire department maintained a shift service until Monday evening at 10:15 PM, ensuring the scene was secure before handing it over to the owner. However, the hall collapsed shortly afterwards, raising suspicions of asbestos-containing fiber cement in the roof covering. The municipality is taking measures regarding soot and ash particles, pending the results of LANUK laboratory tests.
The straw bale fire in Labbeck led to a significant incident, requiring extensive efforts from the Sonsbeck fire department. While the fire was controlled and no injuries were reported, the presence of asbestos and the subsequent hall collapse necessitate further action. The municipality is taking appropriate steps to ensure the safety of the public and the environment.
